Here
are the steps you might take when measuring your kitchen
space. . .you need to run a tape measure over the space, recording the
overall distance (in millimetres) between finished/ lined walls. . .and
the distance from corners to the architrave/facings of any door and
window openings — you need to know the clear wall space you have
for cabinetry.
Record
your measurements by sketching a plan of the space. . .graph or squared
paper is good but not absolutely necessary.
Beginning
at the top left corner of your drawing measure to the first window,
door, or wall. Continue clockwise around the room until each wall, window
and door has been measured.
Note:
When measuring doors and windows the architrave/facing/trim is considered
part of the door or window. As shown in the drawing below. . .so measure
doors and windows from the outside of the trim on one side to the outside
of the trim on the other side.
Example
sketch:

If
you are renovating do not include existing cabinets/items you do not
intend to keep in the design of your new kitchen.
Make
sure you show doors opening the right way and note the clear wall height
under window sills.
Measure
the ceiling height and write it in the center of your drawing. Sometimes,
especially with older homes, it is a good idea to take measurements
in a few different places in the kitchen. Ceiling heights and distances
between 'parallel' walls can vary by 50mm or more!
Record
the position, size and height of the floor of any permanent features
such as sink wastes in a concrete floor or built in posts etc. . .and
also any features you have decided to retain in your design.
Double
check your measurements and add up the parts to check that opposite
walls tally.
Important!
This stage is for working on the design only and we recommend
that the person responsible for the installation of your new kitchen
is also responsible for the final site measure from which the kitchen
is ordered.

are also in the process of developing a DIY Design
Pack which we are currently consumer testing. . .if you would
